  • Hacker Recovers $3 Million in ‘Lost’ Bitcoin

The incredible rise in the value of various cryptocurrencies over the years has led many early investors to become very wealthy. This wealth-building technique has been compared to a modern-day gold rush, but there’s a huge difference between holding physical gold and holding digital assets.

One of the biggest challenges of holding cryptocurrency or money in a digital wallet is that you could accidentally lose access to it if you forget your passcode or lose access to an email account.

Unfortunately, many individuals who wind up losing access to their accounts or digital currencies simply believe they’ve lost their money for good. That might not be the case, though!

In one recent example, Joe Grand, a legendary hacker, was able to successfully open a software wallet that the owner thought was lost for good. By doing so, he recovered a whopping $3 million!

The owner, Michael from Germany, had purchased the bitcoins way back in 2013. He stored them in a software wallet and used a password generator to create a secure, unique passcode. From there, he saved the passcode in an encrypted text file. Tragically, the encrypted text file became corrupted, so Michael thought he had lost access to the account entirely. At the time of the loss, his bitcoins were worth around $2,200.

At first, Michael took it as a total loss, but over the years, bitcoin began increasing substantially in value. By 2024, his “lost” bitcoin was worth $3 million. At that point, Michael reached out to the legendary hacker Joe Grand for help. The hacker was able to successfully hack the RoboForm’s code to determine how it generated passwords. Then, they used a tool from the National Security Agency called Hydra to target the password-generating software into revealing the potential password for the lost wallet.

They did this by tricking the system into developing the same passwords as it had created in the past. They “traveled back in time” utilizing the hacking method and had the password generator re-create the password. Incredibly, the tactic worked!
