Unfortunately, around one in five Bitcoins in existence is currently lost or considered inaccessible due to lost passwords, hardware issues, software problems, and other issues. If you’ve found yourself among those statistics, then it’s worth your time to determine your options for recovering your digital money.
Passwords can be recovered in several ways. The first step you need to take is to determine what type of wallet you were using to store your cryptocurrency.
Custodial wallets are managed with a private key or password, but these passcodes can easily be reset or changed through Know Your Customer authentication. Non-custodial wallets, on the other hand, give you full control over your password. If you lose it, then there’s no simple way to recover it. You’ll have to figure out another option.
If you do have a custodial wallet, then the first step you should take is to go to your exchange’s login page. Look for a “forgot password?” option or area and enter in your account details. At that point, the directions on screen will tell you what to do. You will likely need to verify your identity by either submitting personal documentation or answering specific security questions. Once you’re verified, you’ll be able to create a new password. Be sure to keep a copy of it somewhere safe.
If you don’t have a custodial wallet, forgot your password, but still have the seed phrase, then it might be possible to restore your wallet through your wallet provider.
First, visit your wallet provider and log in. From there, you should see an option to “restore a wallet.” Use this option and your saved seed phrase to get your wallet from the backup. Taking these steps will prompt you to create a new password that will completely replace your old, forgotten one.
If you have a non-custodial wallet and also lost your seed phrase, then you might be able to find your lost password by restoring old emails, checking password managers for any stored information, using data recovery tools, or searching your hard drive for any backups.
Getting in touch with a cryptocurrency restoration service is also a great solution. Cryptocurrency experts may be able to use brute-force recovery tools, blockchain forensics, or other legal hacking methods to locate your lost and forgotten password.
